Gurgaon is a district head quarter in Haryana and the heart of
a major industrial area. Gurgaon has developed into a large and flourishing town
because of its vicinity to New Delhi which is about 30 Kms from here. Gurgaon also
known as 'Guru Gram' or 'Guru Gaon' ( village of the spiritual teacher) was named
after Dronacharya, a character in the Epic Mahabharata. It is said that Guru Dronacharya
of the Pandavas and the Kauravas gave spiritual instructions to them at this place.
Till Independence it was industrially backward, but now a large number of industries
like Maruti, Atlas Cycles etc have sprang up in this area. Real estate is booming
here with new buildings coming up at an astronomical pace.
GURGAON: A KALIEDOSCOPE
Gurgaon suddenly burst on the national radar with many potential and promises for
future. There are problems abound, like bad traffic, the rich and poor divide, poor
train connectivity from other parts of the country, but promises and potential are
still there. Gurgaon has people from all economic strata of the society. There are
original inhabitants rubbing shoulder with cosmopolitan diaspora, called the BPO
generation.
Gurgaon Language
People in Gurgaon speak different languages, which may be incomprehensible to others.
Right from Mewati, Brajbhasha and Ahirwati to Hinglish to English, one can hear
every language in Gurgaon. Yes! There can be cases of a person toppling over heels
in his endeavour to have a view of the top of the Manhattanesque skyline, but social
needs are as such that everybody gets an opportunity to realize his/her dream befitting
individual capability.
Gurgaon History : Guru Dronacharya
Gurgaon has deep connections with history and its association with the
legendary Guru Dronacharya is well known. It is said that Gurugram was gifted to
Guru Drona by Pandavas as a gesture of obeisance. Not only this, Gurgaon is associated
with Kanishka and Kushana as well. Coins from their period have been unearthed from
nearby areas.
Gurgaon Geography
The present Gurgaon district comprising nine blocks Tauru, Nuh, Pataudi, Nagina,
Punhana, F.P.Jhirka, Sohna, Gurgaon & Farrukhnagar was created on 15 August,1979.
It is the southern-most district of Haryana. The district lies between 27 degree
39' and 28 degree 32' 25" latitude, and 76 degree 39' 30"and 77 degree 20' 45" longitude.
On its north, it is bounded by the district of Rohtak and the Union Territory of
Delhi. Faridabad district lies to its east. On its south, the district shares boundaries
with the states of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. To its west lie the district of
Rewari and the State of Rajasthan. Gurgaon town is about 32 kms away from New Delhi,
the National Capital of India.
Gurgaon Climate
The climate, except during the monsoon, is characterized by the dryness in air,
a hot summer and a cold winter. The year may be broadly divided into four seasons,
viz. winter, summer, monsoon and the post monsoon or the transit period. The winter
starts late in November and continues up to the beginning of March. The summer is
from March till the end of June. The period from July to mid September is the south
west monsoon season. Mid September to end of November constitutes the post monsoon
or the transition period.
Rainfall in Gurgaon
The normal annual rainfall in the district is 553.00 mm. The rainfall in
the district increases from the west towards the east. About 77% of the annual rainfall
in the district is received during the south-west monsoon months. Temperature in
Gurgaon From about the beginning of March, temperatures begin to increase rapidly.
May and June are the hottest months when the mean daily maximum temperature is about
41° C. While days are little hotter in May than in June; Nights are warmer in June
than in May. From April onwards, hot dust-laden winds locally known as loo blows
and weather is unpleasant. The mean daily maximum temperature in January is about
21° C and the mean daily minimum temperature about 7° C.
Humidity in Gurgaon The air is generally dry during the greater
part of the year. Humidity is high in the south-west monsoon season. April and May
are the driest months when the relative humidity in the morning is about 30 per
cent and in the afternoon less than 20 per cent. Cloudiness in Gurgaon In the south-west
during the monsoon season and for brief spells of a day or two in winters in association
with passing western disturbances, heavily clouded or overcast skies generally prevail.
The skies are mostly clear or lightly clouded during rest of the year.
Festivals and Fairs in Gurgaon
Festivals and fairs are an integral part of religious life. The common
festivals celebrated by the Hindus are Holi, Janmashtami, Dussehra and Diwali. The
other festivals are Shivratri, Gugga Naumi, Solono and Bhaiya Duj. Mela Masani mata
or Sheetala Mata ka mela and mela Chhat Bhadon or Baldev Chhat are the more important
fair held in the district. Mela Pir, mela Burha Baba or Mela Vankhandeshwar, Mela
Suraj Kund, Mela of Ravan of Meos and Mela Jhirka are locally important fairs.
