1 day, 2 tragedies: 12 run over by trains in NCR GURGAON/NEW DELHI/BALLABGARH: Separated by barely 12 hours, 12 people lost their lives on railway tracks in NCR on Tuesday — run over by trains as they crossed the tracks, mindless of danger.

The first of the accidents occurred around 7.20am when six people, one of them carrying a two-year-old infant, were crossing the tracks at Haily Mandi near Gurgaon The victims, from Jhatoli village, had got off a bus on the flyover that runs above the railway tracks, about half a kilometre from Pataudi Road Station. They were to catch a local train to Gurgaon and decided to walk on the tracks instead of taking a detour to reach the station. The New Delhi-Ajmer Shatabdi train that was speeding in, ran over them, killing the infant and five people on the spot.

Officials said a goods train had changed tracks at the last minute to make way for the Shatabdi and this might have distracted those on the track and blocked the view of the Shatabdi driver.

Blaming the railways and demanding compensation, angry locals surrounded the train, ransacked the station premises and beat up railway staffers. Some money was also reportedly looted.

But even as railway officials ordered a probe, news came in of six gangmen being run over by a train between Ballabgarh and Asouti stations on one of India’s busiest tracks — the Delhi-Palwal-Agra route.
