Even though Hero Honda posted the highest-ever quarterly sales of 1.2 million units for the first quarter ended June 30, 2010, the two-wheeler market leader announced a two per cent drop in its net profit to Rs 492 crore for the period. It had reported a profit of Rs 500 crore in the same period last year.
The marginal dip in profit is due to a 20 per cent rise in the consumption of raw materials, increase in input costs, besides the cost of upgrading products to meet the new emission norms.
Mr Pawan Munjal, Managing Director and CEO, Hero Honda, said, “It has been a record quarter of highest-ever numbers, and we could have done even better, but for the short supply of some components. On the other hand, it was a challenging quarter for the bottom line due to the rise in commodity prices. Switching over to the new emission norms also added to the expenditure.”
He added, “We are scaling up production in our existing plants to meet the expected market demand.”
Unit sales
While unit sales increased 10 per cent to 1.2 million units, the net sales for the Gurgaon based company in the three-month period, rose 12 per cent to Rs 4,265 crore, compared to Rs 3,811 crore in the same period last year.
In May, the company reported record high monthly sales of 4.35 lakh units, while in June, the sales were also over four lakh.
The company's board approved the resignation of Mr O.P Munjal, Non-executive Director, and the appointment of Mr Suman Kant Munjal as Additional Director (Non-executive).
